GREENVILLE, N.C. — App State Men's Golf posted its second straight fourth-place tournament finish, posting an 11-under total Monday in the 15-team Ironwood Collegiate Classic hosted by East Carolina.
The Mountaineers, who were fourth in the 13-team Temple Invitational last week, had a 6-under final round as a team on the par-72 layout to post a 286-285-282—853 total.
App State benefited from top-20 finishes by
Alex Martin (T-11th, 4 under),
Rob Bergevin (T-11th, 4 under) and
Cole Bergheim (T-18th, 3 under).
Max Cranford shot a 4-under 68 in the final round while competing as an individual, and
Herman Huus had a 3-under 69 in the final round. With
Ben Read shooting 1-under 71 to close the 54-hole event, which included 36 holes Monday, all five Mountaineers had a score of par or better in the final round.
Martin shot 2-under rounds on both sets of 18 holes Monday to finish at 72-70-70—212, while Bergevin opened the event with back-to-round rounds of 2 under en route to a 70-70-72—212.
Bergheim was tied for 10th place after an opening-round 70, and five birdies in the first seven holes of Round 2 contributed to a 4-under stretch that pushed him into a tie for the tournament lead at 6 under through 25 holes. He was in the lead at 7 under through 28 holes before he bogeyed four of his final five holes in Round 2 and finished at 70-71-72—213.
The Mountaineers unofficially jumped into a tie for second place on the back nine of the final round, trailing team champion East Carolina by six strokes at the time. ECU won the team title at 23 under, eight strokes ahead of runner-up UCF, and Jacksonville State was third at 13 under.
ECU's Philip Bondestad won the individual title at 11 under (69-68-68—205).
The 2025-26 season is presented by Hound Ears Club. The Mountaineers close their fall season at the Bash in the Boro event hosted by Georgia Southern from Oct. 13-14.
