Joey Jones serves as App State's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications.
As the athletics department's primary spokesperson, he directs all communications for the department and its 17 sports. He is the chief communications officer and media contact for the nationally ranked football program and acts as a member of the department's executive leadership team. He also oversees the sports productions and creative services units, while serving a lead role in App State Athletics' overall brand strategy.
Jones was hired as the Associate AD for Strategic Communications in 2017 and served in that capacity for two years before being promoted to Senior Associate AD.
Since Jones arrived in Boone, he has overseen communications efforts for a football program that has won three Sun Belt Conference titles and five bowl trophies. He and his staff were media hosts for the inaugural Sun Belt Football Championship Game on Dec. 1, 2018, which App State won 30-19 over Louisiana, as well as the 2019 win over Louisiana.
App State's staff was recognized by the Football Writers Association of America as one of its Super 11 sports information departments in the FBS after both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
Jones worked in athletics communications at Ole Miss from 2005-17, serving as an assistant director from 2006-07, an associate director from 2007-16 and a communications specialist starting in December 2016. He worked closely with nine sports during his 12 years at Ole Miss, including five years as the primary contact for men's basketball and the last five as a secondary contact for football.
Jones was part of the Ole Miss staff that earned FWAA Super 11 distinction in 2013. Working on the football program's social media accounts from their inception, he helped attract thousands of followers to the Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts as part of a collaborative team focused on innovative graphics, video and informational content.
Jones also generated publicity for 48 student-athletes who received All-America honors in football, track & field and cross country during his last six years at Ole Miss.
Before joining the Ole Miss staff, Jones was a student assistant in the sports communications department at Georgia from 2003-04.
He graduated from Georgia in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. He and his wife, Gwen, have three children: JW, Gabe and Violet.
