CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The App State tennis team earned a dominant 5-2 victory over Queens on Friday, improving their record to 4-2 on the season.
What Happened
The Mountaineers got off to a strong start, taking a 1-0 lead in doubles after Queens (0-6) was unable to play a third team. The pair of
Naledi Manyube and
Olwyn Ryan-Bovey wasted no time, sweeping their match 6-0 to secure the doubles point for App State.
With Queens missing a sixth singles player, the Mountaineers extended their lead to 2-0 before singles play even began.
In singles,
Alexi Cleveland and Manyube delivered impressive performances, each winning with ease and pushing the Mountaineers past the four-point threshold needed for the victory. Manyube clinched the win for App State, showing her dominance with a 6-1, 6-1 scoreline and dropping just one game in each set.
Despite tough losses from Powell at the No. 1 spot and
Cassidy Carlson at the No. 5 spot, every other Mountaineer victory came in straight sets.
Ruby Broadbent added on to the point total, winning her match 6-2, 6-4. This victory marks the third time this season the Mountaineers have tallied 5 or more points in a match.
