Boekaar's Overtime Goal Lifts App State Field Hockey Over No. 18 JMU

BOONE, N.C. — The App State field hockey team took down No. 18 James Madison 5-4 in the Mountaineers' first ranked win since 2023.

The Mountaineers (8-1, 3-0 MAC) put on the pressure, tallying 16 shots on goal to James Madison's  eight on the day.

Sophia Baxter, Lise Boekaar, Frederique Grimbergen, Hadley Kuzmicky and Kassie Paul all found the back of the cage in the matchup. Boekaar's goal came in overtime, fitting it in the right side of the goal to clinch the win for the Mountaineers.

How it Happened
1st: The Dukes (7-4, 2-1 MAC) came out quick, finding the back of the cage in the early stages of the game. The Mountaineers kept the pressure on, with Grimbergen finding Kuzmicky to tie the game at one apiece to end the period.

2nd: The Mountaineers turned up the pressure in the second, earning six penalty corners and forcing five saves. Grimbergen found the back of the cage from Carlotta Fabian, giving the Mountaineers the lead heading into the break.

3rd: It was an offensive period for both sides, with three goals in total. Paul got the Mountaineers on the board coming out of the half, doubling the lead. James Madison responded with a penalty stroke to bring it within one, but Baxter quickly followed to put the Mountaineers back up two off a penalty corner.

4th/OT: To close out regulation, the Dukes found the back of the cage twice, one coming off a penalty stroke, to send the game into overtime. The Mountaineers kept control of the ball in overtime, and with less than three minutes into extra time, Boekaar found the back of the cage to close out the 5-4 overtime win.
